Song of Renewal by Emily Sue Harvey

Imagine that your child is in a terrible accident, and in a coma. Picture also that you have had a strained relationship with your spouse and child. Envision the surging emotions that you would encounter.

Such a situation is the setting for Emily Sue Harvey’s first novel, Song Of Renewal. Song of Renewal is a story of redemption, physical recuperation of wounds, psychological rejuvenation of bonds in a family, and spiritual healing of relationships within a family and with God.

The story focuses on the Wakefields, Garrison, Lisa, and their daughter Angel. Garrison and Lisa have slowly grown apart over their twenty years of marriage. Garrison concentrated on his business while Lisa championed numerous causes and coached her daughter in dance. Angel sensed the growing distance and struggled to please both parents while avoiding her own personal growth.

Near the beginning of the novel Angel is in a terrible automobile crash that kills her boyfriend and puts her into Intensive Care with multiple injuries and a coma. The accident and its threat to Angel’s life and health shocks Garrison and Lisa into a full range of emotions. They pass through anger, denial, blame, fear, guilt, self pity, bitterness, and loneliness.

The parents desperately wish for Angel’s recovery. Before Lisa and Garrison can really help Angel they must mend their relationship. Restoring their relationship depends upon their healing themselves and forgiving each other and God. Their struggle to conduct self examination, reach out to each other and conquer the barriers before them makes for a fascinating story with powerful spirituality.
